Modesolver comparison

Introduction

This article descibes shortly the differences and similarities between FieldDesigner, the mode solver of PhoeniX, and other modesolvers.

Simulation

FieldDesigner uses two optimized mode field solvers, one based on the Film Matching Method (FMM) the other on Finite Difference (FD) approach, that together allow one to determine the modes of almost any type of waveguide.

Though OlympIOs' modesolvers together provide the same functionality, continued algorithmic development as well as incorporation of numerical libraries supporting specific computer hardware (see Numerical libraries used by PhoeniX Optical Simulation Software), have much enhanced the efficiency of the modesolvers.

For completeness sake the following table shows the type of modes that can be determined

Complex yes yes
Leaky yes yes

User interface

    In many aspects we have improved on our earlier programs, just a few main topics:
  • Connectivity between objects
    Any waveguide part can be positioned absolute (like OlympIOs or other software), but also use a connection scheme like that of MaskEngineer.
    You can simply say "the bottom of this rectangle should be connected to the top of the other one"
  • Full integration of script language for optimisation, structure definition and simulation settings.
    No more separate OSD, OPT and SPT files!
  • Kamus dialog
    A library containing all the functions and most of the script constructions in a online dialog, which even automatically adds your own functions, including parameter names and (default) value.

Plot capability

Using the standard VTK library as the back-end for our plots gives very fast and powerful plots to display the results of your simulations. See also What libraries do you use for the GUI?.

Multi-platform

PhoeniX uses the wxWidgets library to provide a truly multi-platform toolset, which has a look and feel which is the same on both Linux and Windows. See also What libraries do you use for the GUI?.

Material definition

A new and very flexible way of defining your materials has been developed. Apart from an extensive material library which is delivered along with the program, you can easily setup your own. Simply define a basic material and "extend" this to change properties.
Eg. define your bulk SiO2 to setup a basic material definition including optical, thermal and mechanical properties which are well known. For your thin-film material you extends this material with the properties you have measured in your own cleanroom.
    material 'Silicon Dioxide (SiO2)' {
    Density() {return 2197.7;} //kg/m^3
    ThermalConduct() {return 1.38;} //W/m/K
    PoissonRatio() {return 0.166;}
    YoungsModulus() {return 0.003461;} //GPa
    Resistivity() {return 3.98e+11;} //Omega*m
    RefractiveIndex(lambda) {
    /* Lambda in mu */
    var W2=sqr(lambda*1e3);
    return sqrt(1+1.09877*W2/(W2-sqr(92.4317)));
    }
    }

    material 'ThinFilm SiO2' extends 'Silicon Dioxide (SiO2)' () { PoissonRatio() {return 0.2;}
    }
